If there ever was a time to embrace your inner artist, this is it.

We are home and isolating as much as possible, twiddling our thumbs. Our anxiety is through the roof. Watching just enough news to stay informed is still too much for your sanity. We need to take our minds off things, so we go for walks, listen to audio books and podcasts, Netflix and try to chill.

But we need something to keep our minds and hands busy during this time and art is the perfect solution.

Whether you are interested in painting (watercolors, oils, or acrylics), drawing (pencil, oil pastels, or charcoal), writing (screenplays, short stories, journaling), collage, sculpture, photography, pottery, or baking – this is the perfect time to get your hands dirty and just play around. Nothing to lose but time.

Personally, I just ordered some painting supplies and I’m looking forward to having Bob Ross teach me how to paint happy little clouds.

Reigniting Your Creative Spark

I am an affiliate of some of these products and services and may receive a referral commission if you click and make a purchase. I only recommend companies that I have used myself and that I truly see value in.

Creativity is something that is in all of us. I truly believe we are all artists in our own way and simply have to tap into it. With all that is happening in the world right now, this is the perfect opportunity for all to explore their inner creator. Most of us certainly have the time, for the next few weeks at least.

Lately though, I’ve lost that thing that motivated me to make art for art’s sake. I’ve been waiting for that aha, epiphany, choir singing moment to hit because I’ve lost it.

See, I’ve had it before, so I know what I’ve lost. It’s been years and that spark hasn’t reignited.

Could it be that I am creative for work – for my day job as a graphic designer. Creating all day, working on other people’s visions leaving me without the energy for personal artistic expression? Could it be that I am business-minded and always think “I could sell that” whenever I make something which puts too much pressure on myself to create something perfect that others will like? Could it be fear that what I actually create won’t hold a candle to what I envision in my mind?

It’s probably a good mix of all three.

All of this has led me to believe that maybe I simply don’t know what my passion is, though I thought I did. Because after all, if I had one, I couldn’t live unless I did something to fulfill it everyday, right?

So in times like these, I turn to books. I’m not embarrassed to admit that I love a good self-help book!

I’m currently reading Beginner’s Pluck: Build Your Life of Purpose and Impact Now by Liz Forkin Bohannon.

I heard the author being interviewed on a podcast and liked what she had to say. She had a different take than the typical motivational advice you hear from a lot of authors.

She sticks it right to you, point blank, no sugar coating.

She basically says, that you’re never going to “Find your Passion.” It isn’t hiding under a rock waiting, ready to pop out at you and once you find it, then you are off and running to the races and nothing can stop you. It doesn’t work like that.

You don’t find it, you build it.

Start small, do a little at a time, and keep going even once the adrenaline wears off. She says to stay open-minded, brave, and curious and see where that curiosity takes you. Be open to change direction if new information comes to you. When you approach your interests and life like that, you are always in the beginner’s mindset. And the perk of the beginner’s mindset is that you are up for anything, anytime, because you don’t know anything yet. This in turn gives you that beginner’s pluck.

Pluck (n): Spirited and determined courage

So with this new knowledge, I need to spark that curiosity to reignite my innate creativity. Below are some books to help me do so. I’ve read a few, but most are on my to-read list.

Reading List:

The Modern Cat

I am an affiliate of some of these products and services and may receive a referral commission if you click and make a purchase. I only recommend companies that I have used myself and that I truly see value in.

I’m an over-researcher. When looking to find the perfect “X” I tend to exhaustively research the product until I find the “Perfect One.” So when I recently stumbled across an Amazon List that I had set up years ago when searching for a modern cat bed, I couldn’t help but giggle. I thought, “This must be the most comprehensive list of cool, modern, unique, un-ugly cat beds in history.” So, I thought I would share these finds.

There are some pretty darn amazing cat beds, cat loungers, cat houses, and cat hideaways out there. If you have a certain home decor aesthetic, you don’t have to settle for any old boring cat bed. Here I list items that lean towards a mid-century modern design aesthetic since that is how my apartment is furnished. But there really is something out there for every design style.

I just stumbled across this new font by designer Nicky Laatz called Glamour Absolute. It is a beautiful bold serif typeface with elongated and curvy vintage inspired serifs. Both modern and vintage at once. Check out her usage samples below. Simply gorgeous!

Showcase: Art Deco Peacocks

Art Showcase of Peacocks featured in Art Deco Designs

One of the most fun parts of the design process is gathering inspiration. This is something I do at the start of every project. I was going through some old client work and found a custom holiday card that I designed for my client Junkyard Showroom, a jewelry and accessories showroom back in 2012. My client wanted a vintage, art deco aesthetic with a glittery, gilded peacock so my inspiration file is filled with gorgeous vintage peacock illustrations, iridescent peacock feathers, and other related imagery. Below is a showcase of over 90 vintage art deco peacock art, designs, and illustrations. Enjoy browsing this collection of vintage advertisements, antique posters, contemporary abstract artwork, art nouveau etchings, and vintage woodcut prints with ornamental motifs. I hope these inspire you as well.

And just for fun, here is a recording of ‘Desert Dreams’ by Leonard Lewin, Selvin’s novelty orchestra, year unknown. Sheet Music Cover Art by Albert Wilfred Barbelle.

Ballots over Broadway Benefit

Designing for a cause.

I had the pleasure of doing some design elements for a one-evening-only charity event here in Los Angeles. The good folks at Feminists in Action Los Angeles and Hang Out Do Good put together a fabulous event (in under a month!) to raise money for two organizations who are doing amazing work to get people to the polls. Ballots over Broadway was an intimate evening of Broadway musical performances sung by some pretty amazing stars of stage and screen. The event benefited Field Team 6 and Spread the Vote. More about them below:

SPREAD THE VOTE

Spread the Vote works to increase voter participation since the largest population of voters in America are registered, but don’t turn up at the polls. This is because of challenges with transportation, childcare, voter education, and more that keep people from showing up on election day. Spread the Vote helps people in voter ID states get the IDs they need for life and to vote. 77% of the people they work with have never voted before.

What they do:

  • Obtain IDs for eligible voters in voter id states
  • Help voters make and execute a plan to vote
  • Make election guides for real people
  • Create digital and real-world educational tools
  • Educate voters 365 days a year

FIELD TEAM 6

Field Team 6 is a national volunteer army with a simple mission: Register Democrats and Save the World. They register voters exclusively in the districts and states where they will make the most impact; in presidential swing states, Senate swing states, and swing House districts. Their approach: Positive human interaction – because it wins elections! They connect with people in real conversations, listen to their concerns, and then not only register them to vote — they educate them so they know what to do with that vote.
